Happy Mother's Day

A Mother's Day run through Prospect Park, pastéis de nata in Brooklyn, and why community is everything in perimenopause.

Hi everyone,

it's a lovely day in New York City and I wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day. Let me know how you celebrated! What were your plans, what did you do? Did you spend time alone without the family, or did you have breakfast in bed with lots of presents and flowers?

I went running this morning at 8 am through Prospect Park. It was a lovely foggy morning, a perfect day for an easy run. I am training for a half marathon right now, and running during perimenopause has been one of the most grounding things I have done for my mental and physical health. We ran together in a group of women over 40, all moms, and decided to go for a coffee in the neighborhood afterward.

The good thing about New York is you can find everything you dream of. Every country is represented here in some way. So today we decided to celebrate Mother's Day with a galão and a pastel de nata at a lovely cafe called Lisbonata in Brooklyn!

Sometimes you need a day off from mom duty and, honestly, eating 2 pastéis de nata after one loop in Prospect Park felt amazing. (Hello blood sugar, my friend -- I am sorry. Yes, blood sugar and perimenopause are a whole conversation we will have another time.)

But isn't it all about balance? If you are too rigid, the joy of life goes missing. And isn't it all about joy? Finding joy in the little things? Meeting friends and having a supportive community? As a midlife woman navigating perimenopause symptoms, I think this is the most important thing: not feeling alone, prioritizing self-care, and having people around you who just get it.

With that said, have a lovely day, enjoy the sun, and find joy in the little things life throws at you.

And if you are in the area, check out Lisbonata. Believe me, one bite of that tasty little nata and you are instantly transported to the vibrant streets of Lisbon.
